Hausdorff Center for Mathematics

The Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM), established in 2006 as the first German Cluster of Excellence in Mathematics, is a major center for mathematical research and international scientific exchange. Its spectrum ranges from pure and applied mathematics to interdisciplinary research, including theoretical economics. HCM features the Hausdorff Research Institute (HIM) with its trimester programs and the Hausdorff school for Mathematics (HSM) which is the central institution serving all early-career researchers in mathematics at Bonn: from doctoral students to advanced postdocs.

News and Highlights

Dennis Gaitsgoy awarded 2025 Breakthrough Prize9
Dennis Gaitsgory, director at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM) and member of the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM), receives the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics, endowed with 3 million US dollars “for foundational works and numerous breakthrough contributions to the geometric Langlands program and its quantum version; in particular, the development of the derived algebraic geometry approach and the proof of the geometric Langlands conjecture in characteristic 0”.
Rajula Srivastava receives the Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize10
Rajula Srivastava from the Mathematical Institute at the University of Bonn has received a Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize from the Breakthrough Prize Foundation for her outstanding research achievements. The award is endowed with 50,000 dollars.
Alexis Prévost heads a new Emmy Noether group11
How does water move through a filter with coffee? This question is not so easy to answer, as neighboring areas in the moist coffee powder influence each other. How the hot water moves through the roasted powder is also governed by stochastic processes. Answers are provided by what are known as “percolation models,” which Alexis Prévost is investigating. He joined the University of Bonn from the University of Geneva and now leads an Emmy Noether group. It is being provided with up to 1.3 million euros of funding by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Leopoldina elects Daniel Huybrechts as a member12
A few weeks ago, the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina elected Daniel Huybrechts as a member of the Leopoldina on the recommendation of renowned colleagues from among its members.

Hausdorff Chairs

The Hausdorff Chairs make it possible to complement the faculty without the usual constraints in terms of timing and fields. We seek internationally outstanding scientists who fit into the broad spectrum of the Hausdorff Center.

Felix Hausdorff

The center is named after the famous mathematician Felix Hausdorff. Felix Hausdorff was born on 8 November 1868 in Breslau as the son of a Jewish merchant. He was appointed associate professor in Bonn in 1910 and assumed a full professorship in 1913 in Greifswald. He returned to Bonn in 1921 to continue his work until 1935. During the national socialist regime, he suffered increasing harassment and humiliation until 26 Januar 1942, when he and his wife chose suicide over imminent deportation to a concentration camp. With his masterpiece Grundzüge der Mengenlehre (1914), Hausdorff established topology as an independent discipline in mathematics. In addition, Hausdorff made significant contributions to general and descriptive set theory, measure theory, algebra, functional anaylsis, probability theory, and insurance mathematics.
